What Are the Effects of Sativa Cannabis?

Cannabis is well-known for the relaxing, invigorating, and expansive experiences it can provide. Did you know there are multiple strains of the cannabis plant? Cannabis sativa is the strain most often used recreationally. Its high THC content delivers the most potent high, making it suitable for use in a wide variety of products.

Hello High Dispensary offers a variety of cannabis products and even provides weed delivery throughout southern New Jersey. Here, we explore the ins and outs of the legality of cannabis. Discover the different sativa effects and experience them for yourself with the products available in our shop.

What Is Sativa?

First, let’s look at the plant itself. Cannabis sativa is grown in humid, tropical climates. Plants range from 5 to 18 feet tall with long, narrow leaves of a vibrant green color. The flower buds contain a higher concentration of active compounds than the stems and leaves, making them far more potent. The flowers are what recreational cannabis products are made from.

In contrast, the other commonly used strain – Cannabis indica – favors dry climates. The plants tend to be much shorter, reaching only 2 to 4 feet in height. Leaves are broader and more prolific, and their color tends to be darker. Indica plants also have shorter flowering periods than sativa.

What Creates the Effect?

How does a simple plant have such a potent effect? Both Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica produce cannabinoids, or psychoactive compounds that affect the brain when ingested. There are two main kinds of cannabinoids: Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC, and cannabidiol, or CBD. Each cannabinoid has a unique effect:

  • THC: This ingredient is responsible for the noticeable “high” you experience when using cannabis. It stimulates the parts of your brain that respond to pleasure, creating an energizing and euphoric feeling. High concentrations may also be hallucinogenic.
  • CBD: This compound creates less of a noticeable high. Its effects are more subtle. After taking CBD, you may feel mellow, relaxed, or sleepy. You may also experience some pain relief. CBD is most useful for medicinal cannabis, though it also has its place in recreational use.

These cannabinoids interact with a third ingredient, known as terpenes. Also called “terps,” these are aromatic oils that give cannabis its sweet, spicy, or earthy flavor. They also have a relaxing or uplifting effect that builds upon those created by the cannabinoids. This final combination of THC, CBD, and terpenes is together responsible for these cannabis effects.

Cannabis Sativa Effects

The Cannabis sativa strain is unique for its high concentrations of THC. Many plants contain 15% to 20% THC, though some strains may contain up to 30%. This makes sativa the most popular strain for recreational use. It produces the strongest high, with a variety of effects that may include:

  • Relaxation
  • Euphoria
  • Stress or pain relief
  • Anxiety reduction
  • Energy
  • Inspiration
  • Focus
  • Clarity

Everybody responds to cannabinoids and terpenes differently. In addition, the contemporary market features thousands of different strains and cultivars. Each one has been bred for a different balance of THC, CBD, and terpenes, creating an endless variety of unique sensations. Some cultivars, for instance, might provide a revitalizing boost of energy, while others promote restfulness. Others might help you expand your creative potential. No two strains are the same – that’s part of the fun.

Exploring Sativa Effects

Due to the variety of strains and the different ways people react to sativa, the best way to discover its effects is by trying it yourself. There are countless strains to try, available in whole flower or pre-rolled joints for convenience. If you’d like to expand your horizons even further, you can also try some of the other products:

  • Concentrates: These processed forms of cannabis accumulate high concentrations of THC, CBD, and terpenes for a fast and potent high.
  • Tinctures: Made with oil or food-grade alcohol infused with cannabis, tinctures make it easy to customize your experience to different intensities.
  • Topicals: This category includes lotions, balms, and oils meant to be rubbed into the skin, where they relax muscles and relieve localized pain.
  • Edibles: Want to mix it up with new flavors? Edibles feature cannabis infused into delicious food items, including gummies, chocolates, cough drops, and drink squeezes.
